June 12: Primer día de clases, Casco Antiguo de Cádiz

Everyone arrived bright and early for our first day of classes at the Colegio de San Felipe Neri. A good night’s sleep was had by all. We met our language teacher Juan and the students were immersed fully and totally into a Spanish school setting. During el “Recreo,” several of the local Spanish students who also attend the school were chatting up our Rivers students and lots of laughter and smiles erupted. After “La comida,” we met our guide, Fernando, who gave us a wonderful tour of “El Casco” of Cádiz. We enjoyed wandering the old streets of this important port city that has had so much to do with the history of Spain, its connection to the new world, and the writing of the first constitution. We ended our guided tour by being treated to delicious ice cream with the Catedral de Cádiz in the background. We just arrived back to our respective domiciles, both exhausted and invigorated. We can’t wait for tomorrow!
