2023 Day 2: Trevi Fountain, Palatine, Forum, Colosseum

Day two began with a stop at the Trevi Fountain, one of Rome's most iconic sites. We learned the history of its design and discussed several of the superstitions associated with the magnificent fountain. We then proceeded to the Arch of Constantine, an impressive structure commemorating the Roman emperor’s victory at the Milvian Bridge, which consolidated his rule. We then marched up the Via Sacra and under the second arch, this one celebrating the emperor Titus and his victories in the eastern part of the empire. Our penultimate pre-lunch stop was the Palatine Hill overlooking the Circus Maximus on one side and the Roman Forum on the other. We explored the remains of imperial residences and enjoyed a panoramic view of the city before descending into the Forum itself to get a feel for what life was like in the hub of ancient Rome.

After lunch and shopping we spent the afternoon at the Colosseum. We learned about the history and construction of Rome's most impressive site and had the opportunity to go inside and soak in the magnificence. We finished the day with a tasty dinner at Naumachia restaurant before returning to the hotel via the Spanish steps, stopping for the mandatory gelato.
