Day 3: Vatican Museums

The day began with a beautiful walk along the Tiber River past Castel Sant'Angelo to the Bernini-designed St. Peter's square, entrance to the smallest country in the world, Vatican City. We marveled at the mathematical perfection of the columns and the enormous obelisk that serves as the focal point of the piazza. After an hour exploring St. Peter's Basilica under its awe-inspiring dome, we enjoyed a brief lunch before an afternoon in the Vatican Museums, highlighted by the Raphael Rooms and punctuated by our final stop, the Sistine Chapel. We then jumped on the bus and headed south to Pompeii. A delicious dinner at Addu Mimi was followed by a well-earned night of sleep at the Hotel del Sole just outside the entrance to the ancient archaeological site.
