June 16: Xi’an, A Student Voice

Today’s update has been written by one of our students:

Today was our first full day in Xi’an! Our day began with a trip to the terra-cotta soldiers, a very important Chinese landmark. For two hours, we feasted our eyes on the various excavation sites. There were thousands of clay soldiers to look at, and each one was different from the next! We then ate lunch at a local restaurant that served biang biang mian. These noodles were the highlight of my day; they were very delicious, and they paired perfectly with the available spices.

Next, we visited the Big Goose Pagoda, where we observed various ancient temples and scriptures, and then finally had dinner at the Tang Dynasty Theater Show. After a full meal of beautifully presented dumplings, we watched a show filled with gorgeous costumes and explosive dancing. In addition to the powerful plot (regarding the only empress of China), it was interesting to experience the styles of dance (tangsancai) and musical instruments (paixiao) unique to the Tang Dynasty. Overall, it was a fabulous show to finish off a fabulous day in China.
