June 20: The Great Wall, Ming Dynasty Tombs

Writer's picture: The Rivers SchoolThe Rivers School

On the second full day in Beijing today, the group traveled to the Mu Tian Yu section of The Great Wall. After about 20 minutes of climbing steep stairs, the group found themselves atop the wall itself, one of the great wonders of the world that can even be seen from space! The view of the wall and the landscape surrounding was beautiful, and our students made sure to take plenty of pictures. They began their exploration of the wall at the #8 Tower and traveled along the wall past both the #9 and #10 Towers. After descending many stairs, the group found both shade and cool drinks to refresh themselves. Then they traveled to the Ming Dynasty Tombs, where mausoleums for thirteen emperors from the Ming Dynasty can be found. The students also enjoyed seeing the many royal artifacts on display at the tombs. For dinner, the group was treated to traditional Peking duck, and they learned how to eat it (cut right in front of them at the table) wrapped with vegetables in special pancakes.
